An award-winning designer from the internationally renowned Castle Corsetry, Lauren has designed and built thousands of corsets as well as hundreds of custom costume orders specializing in impeccable cosplay recreations. As a geeky girl herself, Lauren’s enthusiasm makes her work truly exceptional.

How did you get into cosplay?

I met Amanda Lynne a few years ago though Addicted to the Knife, Los Angeles’ Repo shadowcast. I fell in love with the costumes for Sarah Brightman’s character, Blind Mag, and started going to conventions in costume to promote our show. Then I realized there were so many other costumes I could make for the cons, and the rest is history!

Who was your 1st cosplay and why?

Blind Mag from Repo! The Genetic Opera – particularly her feathered leather corset from the song “Chromaggia.” I had just started making corsets and this one proved to be quite a challenge, but I learned a lot that I’ve applied to future costume endeavors.

What’s your favorite costume?

I love being Harley Quinn at cons, since I can get away with being goofy and don’t have the stigma of needing to be sexy all the time. Though I think I enjoy being Winnifred Sanderson from Hocus Pocus more than anything in the world. It’s definitely my masterpiece when it comes to my costume making skills. As a bonus, I get to yell at and threaten small children and not get arrested!

What do you geek out about?

I don’t play D&D (not opposed to, just never had time), but I do read the Forgotten Realms books, particularly R.A. Salvatore’s novels starring Drizzt Do’Urden. He’s one of my favorite characters in all of fantasy literature, and I can’t get enough. I love running into someone else who’s read the books and going nuts over them! I may have fangirled all over some guys at Dragon Con last year dressed as Drizzt and Jarlaxle (who my cat is named after!)

When you’re not cosplaying, what do you enjoy doing for fun?

I am scuba certified and I have a mermaid tail, so I like being in the water whenever I have free time. If only I had my own pool or saltwater tank! Amanda and I also play Magic: The Gathering with a femme team of girls in the LA area called Vagic: The Gathering. I’m forever a crazy cat lady who loves nothing more than cat naps with my fluffy boys whenever I don’t need to leave the house.

What would your dream job be?

My ultimate fantasy would be to do costumes for a sci-fi TV show like Star Trek or Stargate SG-1. The opportunities to be creative are incredible in those kinds of shows. I’d love to be able to do time travel episodes, create alien creatures and decide how they’d live and dress, and have creative input in fandoms that may inspire future cosplayers!

What do you enjoy most about cons?

I love hanging out with my friends that may live too far to see often, but always see at cons! It’s really fun to have everyone you love in one place and be able to see everyone. And cosplay drinking parties and drunk MTG tournaments are killer!
